Folding Styles
Different folding styles can help you achieve different things in your printing projects, and some styles work better for certain types of documents than others. So before you think your only fold choices are to fold in half or not to fold in half, read on.
The single fold is of course the most common as it is the most affordable. As soon as you add more folds and more complexity to your printing project you can expect the price to follow suit but don’t forget that your business is worth the extra effort.
A single fold does not just have to be straight down the centre of a page to create a fold out pamphlet either. You can position your fold off to one side to give a side panel of information subsequent to the body of the flyer, as well as folding top to bottom, as well as left to right.
Two fold can give you a DL sized pamphlet if you are evenly putting two folds into an A4 piece of paper. This gives you a designated front cover to catch the readers’ attention, a three ‘page’ spread in the middle to give them all the information they need, and a separated back panel for all of your contact details.
A gate fold is also a two fold document, but instead of the folded ends of the paper overlapping, they meet in the middle, in the same way two sides of a gate meet to close. You can use a gate fold brochure when you have a new product to unveil and it can be printed behind the ‘gate’, or if you are informing people of a new premises you can have them open the gates, or ‘doors’ of an image of your new office printed on the brochure.
There is also a cross fold which folds a sheet of paper horizontally and then vertically, making the resultant document a quarter of the original size. This may suit your printing needs if you want to print a map or diagram on the back and information on the other size, or if you want a quirky document which readers unfold to discover a new message on each of the eight panels.
