  • Celebrity Chef Apposed To Calorie Counting On Menus

Restaurant menus are to introduce calorie counts beside each dish in an attempt to tackle obesity. Pizza Hut and around 300 takeaways have signed up to the voluntary food standards agency scheme, which is set to start this summer. McDonalds and Starbucks are also expected to join, but is there any point? Celebrity Chef Anthony Worrall Thompson believes that this is one step too far.

He commented that a meal in a restaurant is generally a treat for people, who tend to generally eat out once a month, saying that they should be allowed to relax and enjoy themselves, without being tempted into reading the calorific information.

He believes that there is a massive problem with obesity in the UK and something needs to be done. However he feels that the FSA initiative is a well intentioned, yet knee-jerk reaction, similar to one set up in New York.

He also stated that simply presenting the calorie totals wouldn’t give the customer the full picture, with olive oil, which is good for you, yet high in calories being a prime example.

Thompson also believes that chefs need to be allowed to be creative, and on a practical level, keeping track of calories wouldn’t be possible for many restaurants. Some chefs change their menus every day depending on what they buy from the market, so it would be impossible.
